This may be bad, but I buy those super cheap 10 packs of sponges at the dollar store and use them, like three times and throw them out. They're shredded by then anyway and it's more sanitary.
I guess using a dish rag and laundering it or throwing a regular sponge in the dishwasher would be more environmentally friendly but living where I do I don't have either of those luxury appliances.
Hot household tip: wet your sponge, toss it in the microwave for 20-30 seconds, and BAM! Instant like-new sponge. Because who wants to buy new sponges when you can be buying SHOES? -Saratops
